Repair and Metrology Services (RMS) has one key objective: Local Service, Support and Calibration of the highest standard possible within an ISO17025 environment.
RMS was established in 2004 and appointed as the only Fluke authorized service centre in South Africa. Les Wesson, who started with Fluke South Africa in the early 1980s and Van Zyl Koegelenberg started the company as a joint venture. After a short period in operation, Van Zyl Koegelenberg sold off his share in the business to Les Wesson who is currently the full owner and only director of the company.
RMS is a totally autonomous company, running as an independent, third party, electrical test and measurement equipment service centre. The company prides itself in the local support, both in repair and calibration, of not only Fluke and Megger Instruments, for which it is an authorized service centre, but also equipment manufactured by most other manufacturers.
The repair centre stands under the able management of Morney Smit (Service Manager) who personally has in excess of 15 years of test equipment repair and calibration.
The repair centre has access to technical support documentation for a vast range of equipment enabling them to quickly and efficiently fault find and repair instruments. Repairs are carried out by experienced personnel with vast experience in the test equipment field. Original fitted equipment spares are used. Repairs to Fluke and Megger instruments also include any factory-authorized modifications to bring them it up to current standards.
Obsolete equipment or equipment beyond official manufacturer support can also be supported on a best effort basis.
The Calibration Laboratory falls under the management of Eddie Tarnow (Calibration Manager) who personally has in excess of 25 years of experience in metrology and SANAS accreditation. Les Wesson, a metrology legend in the South African Calibration Laboratory community, who has in excess of 30 years of metrology experience, performs most of the calibrations.
RMS is equipped with a fully SANAS accredited calibration laboratory to ensure calibrations performed on instruments result in valid measurement results. Their full SANAS accredited scope can be viewed on the SANAS website at http://www.sanas.co.za where they are lab numbers 129, 529 and 329.
RMS pride themselves in their SANAS accredited scope of measurement capabilities since they are accredited for the smallest uncertainties in a number of parameters in South Africa, outside of the National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA).
Calibrations are performed according to the manufacturer’s performance verification procedures wherever possible and it is standard practice for the instrument’s performance to be checked for compliance with the manufacturer’s accuracy specifications. If found to be outside these performance limits, adjustments are performed and the “as found” and “as left” results reported on the calibration certificate. This enables the customer to take remedial action if required, which may result from an instrument being found to have been performing outside the manufacturer’s accuracy specifications.
At the end of each and every calibration, a calibration certificate is issued, which bears the SANAS accreditation logo. This provides not only local recognition that the RMS calibration laboratory has met, and continues to meet the requirements if ISO IEC 17025 as proven through independent third party assessment by SANAS, but also international recognition of calibration performed in South Africa. This is of particular importance if a company has overseas principals and needs to comply with international standards.
